Claim a partner here. Reply with:
- your name
- what you actually do (the domain, not the job title)
- one workflow you own that you could be interviewed about
Then find someone whose reply you do not fully understand, and reply to them: “pairing with you.” Edit your original post to say who you paired with, so nobody gets left out at the end.
Pair across the gap, not with the person most like you
The room was deliberately mixed - working engineers alongside people earlier in their career. The mix is the point. If you are an engineer, pair with someone whose domain you have never worked in. If you are earlier in your career, pair with someone who has been doing it for fifteen years.
Two reasons this is not just an icebreaker:
You cannot coast on domain knowledge. If you already understand their job, you will fill in the gaps yourself instead of asking - and the gaps are exactly where their judgment lives.
They can tell you when you got it wrong. You are building for a real person with a real problem. That feedback does not exist when you build for yourself.
If you end up unpaired
Say so here and it will get sorted. Nobody does this alone.
